For many, having a lawn of green healthy grass is a source of pride. However, raising healthy grass from seed or sod can pose some challenges.
In this short video, Landscaper Dan LeSieur discusses the proper time to use fertilizer on grass. If you’re growing grass from seed, he says you should fertilize once when you plant the seed, and once six weeks later, after the chemicals of the fertilizer have had a chance to break down. If laying sod, you can add fertilizer right away.

Without trees, our world wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful. Planting trees in your yard improves your property values, beautifies your home, and is even good for the environment. But to ensure that your trees grow and stay healthy, you’ll need to care for them properly. Here’s how arborists keep trees healthy all year round:
At the first sign of spring, it’s important that your trees are sprayed with a special kind of oil. Throughout the winter, many insects eggs lie dormant until the weather warms again, at which point the insects hatch and devour the tree. The oil spray eliminates the insect eggs before they have a chance to hatch. If you notice that the leaves on your trees seem yellower than usual, that often means that they have an iron and manganese deficiency. Special micro-nutrient treatment can correct this.
Summer, when a tree is at its most robust, is also when a tree is most likely to suffer from disease and insect infestations. In order for a tree to stay healthy, it must be given an effective yet environmentally-responsible treatment as soon as possible.
Fall is the best time to prune overgrown trees. If you prune any earlier than that, you place the tree’s health in jeopardy, as summer is when a tree gains the energy needed to live through winter. Fall is also a great time for root injection fertilization, which provides the root system with essential fungi and microorganisms to help the tree through winter.

As a homeowner, your blood pressure probably goes up every time termites are mentioned. Termites cause millions of dollars of damage every year. Termites are attracted to the sugars in cellulose, the polymer that wood is composed of, and can seriously compromise the structural integrity of your home. Here are a few signs that you may have termites:
When termites ingest wood, the protozoa in their stomachs digest it. They then produce thin strips of excrement. If you happen across small piles of this excrement near wood in or around your home, you probably have a termite problem.
Termites are fragile creatures that require moisture to survive. Since the sun can easily dry them up, termites build a network of mud tubes through which they travel from place to place without risking exposure. These mud tubes are typically found near the foundation of your home or in crawl spaces. If you see anything resembling a mud tube, it’s important that you call pest control before it’s too late.
Another clear sign of a termite infestation is extensive wood damage. This damage tends to appear in the form of bubbling wood and peeling paint. Try knocking on wood throughout your property—if it sounds hollow when it shouldn’t, there may be termites feasting on the other side.
Perhaps the clearest sign that there are termites in your home is when they swarm. Termites don’t swarm until they reach a certain size, when they’re eager to find a new colony site. If you see a large number of termites together near your home, you’re in trouble.
If you suspect that you have a termite infestation, contact us at Buckeye Ecocare. Our specialists have the knowledge and experience necessary to diagnose and eliminate any termite threat in a safe, efficient manner. It’s amazing how much effort it takes to keep a lawn green. According to MSNBC, Americans spend up to $8.5 billion a year on lawn care products and equipment. You don’t have to break the bank to get green grass—these simple secrets will give you a lush lawn that will stay beautiful, even in these hot summer days.
1. Fertilize Your Lawn:
Fertilize your lawn 4-5 times a year based on soil samples done for your area. Fertilize blends should be balanced and use time release products when the weather is hot. Late fall fertilizer rates should be high so plants can recover from summer stress and begin to store food (carbohydrates) for next year.
2. Water Often:
Water your grass consistently, especially throughout dry summer months. Early morning is best as it allows the lawn to dry before nightfall, when fungus is most active. Water a few times a week, and take care not to water too much. Deep watering encourages root growth, while light watering helps keep roots closer to the surface.
3. Treat Pet Spots Quickly:
Pet urine can burn grass due to the high nitrogen content. Wash pet spots quickly after they happen to avoid burnt spots in the grass.
4. Keep Your Lawnmower in Good Shape:
The average homeowner spends up to 40 hours a year mowing the lawn. Keep your lawnmower in good working condition by checking the spark plug, making sure your blades are sharp and cleaning the air filter.
